Updates for the week, Reminders, etc.

Hello families!
Here are some updates for the week, dates to know, reminders, etc.:

Curriculum:
Math: We've started unit 2 and have already been talking about area of rectangles, how to find perfect squares, and factors. Coming up, we will talk about multiples and properties of polygons.

Reading: We focused on setting last week and have spilled some of that over into this week. Our main focus this week is theme. We talked about lessons that we have learned from books including courage, friendship, trust, honesty, etc. Ask your student about some of the themes we talked about in the story Owl Moon by Jane Yolen.

Writing: We have started planning our SECOND narrative piece. The first one was written to get an idea of where each writer stands entering fourth grade. We are still in the planning processes of this piece, but will begin drafting a rough draft early next week.

Social Studies: We learned about the Constitution in honor of Constitution Day on Monday. We watched the School House Rock about the Preamble. We also worked on PebbleGo to read more about the purpose behind the Constitution. We are starting Missouri geography today and will go into Missouri history later this week.

Science: We are done with adaptations! We will continue talking about them as the seasons change and we see differences in our surroundings outside.

Dates to Remember:
9/24 NO SCHOOL-Staff Development Day
9/25 Family Eat Out Night at Chipotle (Broadway Bluffs Location) 4-8 pm
10/2 Fourth Grade Curriculum Chat in the Media Center 7:45-8:15--Come learn about all of the exciting things happening in fourth grade this year!
10/2 Student Flu Clinic--Pre-registration is necessary
10/13 Chicken BBQ 4-8 pm
10/16 EARLY RELEASE 12:10

Reminders, Housekeeping, and More!
Snacks: Please send your student to school with a snack each day. We always have a few friends that forget snack or don't have snacks available at their house. If you are willing to donate a bag of pretzels, cheez-its, goldfish, chex mix, etc. to our room, those students certainly would appreciate it!

Chicken BBQ: Our 61st Annual Chicken BBQ is just around the corner! Ways you can help support RBE with the BBQ:
- Bid on Auction Items
- Donate gently used items or used RBE sportswear (that is the only clothing allowed) to the Country Store
- Donate NEW items to the silent auction
- Purchase game tickets
- Purchase raffle tickets
***EACH STUDENT HAS A CHICKEN BBQ BAG THAT WENT HOME IN FRIDAY FOLDERS LAST WEEK. PLEASE RETURN TO SCHOOL ASAP, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT PURCHASING!***

Library books & Headphones: Please make sure your student's library books are making their way back to school each Wednesday. Also, each student needs a pair of headphones. I know of several students whose headphones have already malfunctioned. Please check with your student that he/she has a working pair at school.

As more information arises, notes and emails will be sent home. Thank you for your cooperation and communication!

Updates for this week!

Hello, families!
Here are a few quick updates as we end the week:

Math test: The students will be tested over unit 1 on Tuesday, Sept. 11. This is a change from the date I first had said. We will review tomorrow and Monday.

Mark Twain Award Nominee Contest with Mrs. McKinzie: All fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to read all of the Mark Twain Award Nominees (found here) and be rewarded by Mrs. McKinzie. She has all of the details. We really encourage kids to participate in this contest!

Guest Reader: Giada was a student reader this week. She read "A Bad Case of Stripes" to our class. We used this story to analyze character traits. Way to go, Giada!

Have a good rest of the week!
