Conference week updates!

Hi families!
Here is some important information for you to know for the coming weeks:

  • We will have a Math Test TOMORROW, November 15. Please take a minute to look over the review this evening with your child, if possible.
  • Next week we will only have two days of school, Monday and Tuesday. There is no Adventure Club next week, so if your child normally goes there after school, please let me know how your child will be getting home.
  • Our class will have a celebratory Pajama Day on Tuesday, November 20. This is a celebration for one student's sticker chart :)
  • THANK YOU to all the people who I have already met with during conferences, and I look forward to meeting with the rest of you today or tomorrow after school
  • The Book Fair is open until Friday morning. You can opt to send money to school with your child, and I will find an opportune time to send them to the book fair.
  • Reminder: there is NO SCHOOL on Friday of this week due to conferences
  • We will not have a Friday Folder this week because of conferences or next week since it is such a short week. We will resume our regular routine on November 30.
Looking ahead into DECEMBER:
  • We will start having a representative from MU Extension visit our class twice a week to teach nutrition lessons.
  • I will be sending home (soon) a Holiday Activity Calendar of all of the fun Winter/Holiday activities we will be doing throughout December. There will be opportunities for donations for some of the materials to make the projects possible. Keep an eye out for a Sign-Up Genius, coming soon!
As always, please let me know how I can help your child be successful in any other way!
Stay warm!

Updates for the week

Hello, RBE families!
We have been working hard these past few weeks in class! Here are some updates for you:

Curriculum:
Math: We've been working hard in unit 2! We've covered square number patterns, the area formula for rectangles, factors and factor pairs, multiples, prime vs. composite numbers, units of time, and number stories. Coming up we will study triangles and quadrilaterals, symmetry, and patterns. We are planning to test on unit 2 next week sometime. Your student will have a review guide to help with practice problems the evening before the test. If there is a particular topic that you notice your student struggling with during homework, please email me and let me know of it ASAP so I can reteach them at school!

Reading: We're in week 2 of book clubs. During book clubs, students have a reading assignment to complete in a week, along with a specific job (e.g.: visualizer). Then, at book club meetings, we discuss the reading assignment as well as each student's responses to their jobs. Several students have really impressed me with their love for reading this year. I have noticed reading as a strength in our class as a whole.

Writing: We've started drafting our second narrative pieces. I'm excited to compare the first narrative writing to the second. It is nice to see growth early in the year in specific content areas.

Social Studies: We've continued our Missouri Geography unit. I am planning to do a cookie decorating party for the kids sometime soon with sugar cookies shaped like Missouri to show the rivers, important cities, regions, etc. If you are interested in baking these cookies, let me know! I have a cookie cutter :) If you are not interested in baking but would like to provide some supplies for this fun project, also let me know!

Reminders & Dates to Remember:
10/2 Curriculum Chat for parents in the Media Center 7:45-8:15 am
10/2 Flu clinic (must have pre-registered your student)
10/12 Western Day
10/13 Chicken BBQ 4-8 pm
10/16 Early Dismissal 12:10
10/23 Science Center/Zoo Field Trip
10/26 Fall Party 1:40

Headphones: We use our iPads daily in our classroom. Please make sure your child has a pair of working headphones to access at school. These are also needed for Media. I am happy to purchase these for your student if needed. Please just communicate that with me!

Happy first day of October!

Updates for the week, Reminders, etc.

Hello families!
Here are some updates for the week, dates to know, reminders, etc.:

Curriculum:
Math: We've started unit 2 and have already been talking about area of rectangles, how to find perfect squares, and factors. Coming up, we will talk about multiples and properties of polygons.

Reading: We focused on setting last week and have spilled some of that over into this week. Our main focus this week is theme. We talked about lessons that we have learned from books including courage, friendship, trust, honesty, etc. Ask your student about some of the themes we talked about in the story Owl Moon by Jane Yolen.

Writing: We have started planning our SECOND narrative piece. The first one was written to get an idea of where each writer stands entering fourth grade. We are still in the planning processes of this piece, but will begin drafting a rough draft early next week.

Social Studies: We learned about the Constitution in honor of Constitution Day on Monday. We watched the School House Rock about the Preamble. We also worked on PebbleGo to read more about the purpose behind the Constitution. We are starting Missouri geography today and will go into Missouri history later this week.

Science: We are done with adaptations! We will continue talking about them as the seasons change and we see differences in our surroundings outside.

Dates to Remember:
9/24 NO SCHOOL-Staff Development Day
9/25 Family Eat Out Night at Chipotle (Broadway Bluffs Location) 4-8 pm
10/2 Fourth Grade Curriculum Chat in the Media Center 7:45-8:15--Come learn about all of the exciting things happening in fourth grade this year!
10/2 Student Flu Clinic--Pre-registration is necessary
10/13 Chicken BBQ 4-8 pm
10/16 EARLY RELEASE 12:10

Reminders, Housekeeping, and More!
Snacks: Please send your student to school with a snack each day. We always have a few friends that forget snack or don't have snacks available at their house. If you are willing to donate a bag of pretzels, cheez-its, goldfish, chex mix, etc. to our room, those students certainly would appreciate it!

Chicken BBQ: Our 61st Annual Chicken BBQ is just around the corner! Ways you can help support RBE with the BBQ:
- Bid on Auction Items
- Donate gently used items or used RBE sportswear (that is the only clothing allowed) to the Country Store
- Donate NEW items to the silent auction
- Purchase game tickets
- Purchase raffle tickets
***EACH STUDENT HAS A CHICKEN BBQ BAG THAT WENT HOME IN FRIDAY FOLDERS LAST WEEK. PLEASE RETURN TO SCHOOL ASAP, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT PURCHASING!***

Library books & Headphones: Please make sure your student's library books are making their way back to school each Wednesday. Also, each student needs a pair of headphones. I know of several students whose headphones have already malfunctioned. Please check with your student that he/she has a working pair at school.

As more information arises, notes and emails will be sent home. Thank you for your cooperation and communication!

Updates for this week!

Hello, families!
Here are a few quick updates as we end the week:

Math test: The students will be tested over unit 1 on Tuesday, Sept. 11. This is a change from the date I first had said. We will review tomorrow and Monday.

Mark Twain Award Nominee Contest with Mrs. McKinzie: All fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to read all of the Mark Twain Award Nominees (found here) and be rewarded by Mrs. McKinzie. She has all of the details. We really encourage kids to participate in this contest!

Guest Reader: Giada was a student reader this week. She read "A Bad Case of Stripes" to our class. We used this story to analyze character traits. Way to go, Giada!

Have a good rest of the week!

Updates for the week in room 25

Image result for balloonsHello families!!

We've had another great week of learning! I am hoping the routine at home in the mornings and evenings is beginning to set in. I know it has been hard for me to adjust from summer mode!

First things first: We got our iPads this week! A celebration is in order!!!

Here are a few reminders/updates:
Math: We've been reviewing how to add and subtract, we've talked about geometry, converting units of length, and estimating. Next week we will touch on finding the perimeter of shapes and talk about triangles and angles briefly. My hope is to have the students test on Unit 1 next Friday, September 7. If this date changes, I will let you know. A review will come home Thursday evening, we will review in class on Thursday. The best way to study with your student is to create practice problems related to the review packet problems.

Writing: We've been working on a small moment story. Next week we will draft our final draft of it and begin writing another narrative.

Spelling: We did work on spelling list 1 this week. Spelling in fourth grade will only be for additional practice. We use this as a station when we do literacy stations each week. The idea is to just expose the students to new vocabulary and practice phonics skills.

Reading: We focused on story elements this week. Each day we did a different activity related to characters, setting, problem, and solution of a story. Ask your child to identify these when reading at home...they should all be experts now :) Next week's focus is character traits and transformations throughout a story.

Science: We've been immersed in adaptations for the past few weeks. We've talked about structural & functional adaptations that animals have, as well as internal and external features that animals have that serve as adaptations. Next week we will continue with adaptations!

Reminders:
PTA Meeting: Tuesday evening, 6:00 pm. RBE Media Center
Picture Day: Wednesday, Sept. 5. We get our pictures taken at 10:30. Please avoid appointments or picking your child up from school during that time (if possible).
Math Test: Friday morning
Walking School Bus: First day is Friday, Sept. 7. You will need to pick your child up from the end of the trail.

Happy Labor Day weekend!
